About Stichting Ogygia (Ogygia Foundation)
Stichting Ogygia was founded in 2024 with the aim of making classical music relevant and contemporary again for a broad audience. Contemporary classical music is often experimental and difficult to access, while the works of composers like Ravel, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky remain beloved. Stichting Ogygia seeks to bridge this gap by initiating new compositions that are both artistically refined and accessible. The foundation also explores ways to reach people who rarely or never attend concerts, by connecting to how this audience discovers and experiences new music.

The Journey Home
The name of the foundation refers to the island of Ogygia from Greek mythology. At the beginning of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus, having lost all his ships and crew, is stranded on the island with the nymph Calypso. It marks the farthest point from home he ever reaches — and the start of the journey back.
Stichting Ogygia aspires to bring classical music, after all its wanderings, back home.

Policy plan
Policy Plan — Stichting Ogygia
1. Introduction
Stichting Ogygia is committed to renewing and revitalizing classical music for a broader audience. This policy document outlines the foundation’s mission, vision, objectives, activities, and organizational structure, as well as its contribution to the public good over the coming years. The foundation is in the process of acquiring official ANBI (Public Benefit Organization) status.
Chamber of Commerce registration number: 95461752.
2. Mission
The mission of Stichting Ogygia is to make classical music relevant and current for a wide audience by initiating and promoting new compositions that combine artistic quality with a traditional musical idiom. We aim to bring attention to new classical music that is both accessible and innovative, with respect for the rich tradition of classical music and consideration for the evolving expectations of the public.
3. Vision
The foundation envisions a cultural revival of classical music, updating the harmonic richness and melodic strength of works that remain popular to this day. We believe classical music is a universal language that can create connection and emotion across generations and cultural backgrounds. The current practice of contemporary classical repertoire focuses too narrowly on a small group of connoisseurs.
4. Objectives
The foundation’s objectives include:
- Producing and distributing high-quality recordings of new classical compositions
- Organizing concerts to engage a broad and diverse audience
- Reaching listeners who do not usually attend classical concerts through social media and streaming platforms
- Publishing sheet music to make new compositions available to both professional and amateur musicians
- Collaborating with musicians, cultural institutions, and media to increase project impact
- Generating public and media attention for this new direction in classical music
Activities
To achieve these objectives, the foundation undertakes the following:
- Project Elaia: A recording project featuring music by composer Amir Swaab, performed by young, talented musicians including Mattias Spee, Merel Vercammen, and Hadewych van Gent.
- Commissioning new compositions that align with the foundation’s vision
- Organizing concerts where the music is performed live, including a performance of Elaia at the Concertgebouw
- Producing a CD and promoting the music via digital streaming platforms such as Spotify
- Publishing sheet music for educational and professional use
- Launching public campaigns via social media, traditional media, and local promotional channels
- Developing a presentation or manifesto to spark discussion among professionals and audiences about the direction of classical music
- Collaborating with concert halls, festivals, and other cultural organizations to increase visibility and reach
- Engaging with choreographers, filmmakers, and other creatives to broaden the scope and impact of the music
- Although connecting with local audiences is the most direct starting point, the intended audience for this music is not defined by national borders. Classical music is inherently international, and by looking beyond borders, we expand our reach to millions of people.
6. Finances
Stichting Ogygia is funded through donations and patronage, grants and subsidies, sponsorships, crowdfunding, and revenue from sales. The foundation is working toward multi-year funding models. The foundation is committed to transparency and accountability in all financial matters.
